What is the Pacific Garbage Patch?
The Pacific Garbage Patch is a huge collection of trash that is almost the size of Texas! Trash is spreading around the oceans and is infesting the waters, causing animals to die. Garbage enters the water by lakes, rivers or other ways of water transportation! Trash may enter the water through beaches, or beach parties. Plastic and other materials float Into beaches Causing fish to die, and leaving a shortage of
food for other animals.
Points Of View:
Marine Biologist
Opinion: A marine biologist would be concerned by the amount of animals, and fish getting killed, and injured by plastic waste and garbage. They would also try to protect the species.
Science Teacher
Opinion: A science teacher would care because he/she would want to teach about the garbage patch and how it affects people and harms the ocean.
Oceanographer
Opinion: An oceanographer would look into this because they care about the ocean and its environment. They would not like floating pieces plastic in the ocean since it could block sunlight into the ocean. This could prevent plant life from growing in the ocean. Also the plastic would kill the animals and fish in the ocean which would take away the beautiful ocean life.
Our Opinions:
Quinn: I think the Garbage patch is very disturbing and it needs to be stopped. I think that if we reduce the amount of waste and plastic containers we can at least slow down the pollution. The sad thing is that all the trash sitting in the ocean can not all be Picked up, you can also help stop the garbage patch by educating your neighbors and friends about the problem
Satoshi: I think that we need to get rid of the garbage patch. The animals in the ocean are being harmed by all the plastic. We need to get rid of all of the garbage patches in the ocean. The more plastic items are produced by man means there would be more plastic in the garbage patch. If we decrease the amount of things made up of plastic then we would prevent plastic to go to the ocean. In conclusion, all of the garbage patch must be eliminated from the ocean.
Collin: I think that people should go out in the ocean and remove oil from the ocean because oil harms fish’s hearts by giving the fish irregular heartbeats which can be fatal. Oil can make the fish’s electric signals that make its heart beat in sync go haywire by interfering with the potassium and calcium ion
channels.
